Here is a gallery for you skyscraper lovers. "Big Pants" is what many in these parts call this structure, the China Central Television (CCTV) Headquarters in Beijing, China. The nickname is obviously not flattering and the building is likely a contributing factor to Chinese President Xi Jinping's famous call to end "weird architecture" in China back in 2014 (click here to read about that story); but just because she's a nerd doesn't mean she's not special.
If you ignore the bad press and judge for yourself, you'll quickly see that the CCTV Building, with its 2 leaning skyscrapers merged at their peaks, is very unique and very impressive. If you walk these grounds, you'll know that you'll never forget the sight, she's one of a kind. Remember, this is a fully functional building with people and businesses working within it, it's not a decorative sculpture. The complexity and engineering knowhow required to complete such a structure is outstanding, like a tripod on 2 legs defying gravity, a symbol of technological expertise. It's the kind of building that makes you think, "Wow, look what humans can create!"
She may be a nerd, but she's also brilliant.
Her architects are Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren of OMA. Construction began in 2004 and was completed in May 2012, and she peaks at 44 stories and 234m tall.
